Commemorating a loved one

Commemorating a loved one by making a donation is often a comforting way to pay tribute to the memory of a friend, colleague, or family member who has passed away.

Contributions made in memory of individuals may be directed in a variety of ways. Perhaps you would like to:

  • give someone the chance to transform their life and shape their future career by establishing a scholarship;
  • donate to a particular academic department or area of research at the University which was important to the person you wish to commemorate;
  • make an unspecified gift and are happy for the University to use your donation wherever the need is greatest;
  • name a room or even a building in their honour.

Whatever you decide, your contribution will have a lasting impact on the University of Bradford and our future students.

The Claire Terrace

The Claire Terrace was officially opened on 20 May 2011 and will be a permanent memorial to Claire Jarvis, an MBA graduate of the School of Management who sadly died aged 24 years in a flying accident in August 1986.

In 1987 following the loss of their daughter Mr and Mrs Jarvis set up the Claire Jarvis Trust Fund and Bursary. Together with the School of Management, the Claire Jarvis Bursary aimed to increase the opportunity for British female students to pursue an MBA and hopefully thereby enjoy a successful career. The first bursary was awarded in the academic year 1987-88 and since that time 27 students have been recipients.

In early 2011 Mr and Mrs Jarvis made the decision to wind up the bursary and use the remaining funds to sponsor a permanent memorial to Claire on the Emm Lane campus. It was agreed that the terrace which was developed as part of the new build opened in 2010 would be ideal, as it is a space that can be used by current students, staff and alumni. The remainder of the bursary fund has been used to provide the furniture and planting for The Claire Terrace. We are extremely grateful to Claire's family.

Benjamin Jowett Memorial Scholarships

In 1999, the family of the late Benjamin Jowett approached the University of Bradford to establish the 'Benjamin Jowett Memorial Scholarship' fund.

The late Benjamin Jowett co-founded the Jowett Car Company in Bradford in 1901 - Bradford's only major car manufacturer. His family wished their generous donation to be used to establish a scholarship scheme to perpetuate Benjamin's memory and to acknowledge the contribution the Jowett family made to both the industrial history of Bradford and to the automobile industry.

We are very grateful to the Jowett family for their continued support which enables us to recognise the academic achievements of our students.
