Andy Abbott - Producer Music and Visual Arts University of Bradford

Andy is a West Yorkshire-based artist, writer and musician and is Producer Visual Arts and Music for University of Bradford. He holds a practice-led PhD in socially engaged art and self-organised culture from the University of Leeds. 

Andy is responsible for the continued development of the visual arts and music offer from University of Bradford with the aim of Arts on Campus being recognised as a Centre for Socially Applied Arts. This includes the exhibition and events programme at Gallery II, the M@BU music programme and related festivals, as well as the dissemination of his own and others practice and research. 

His artistic and research interests are in participatory, collaborative and socially engaged art; self-organised and artist-led activity; marginal, hidden and underground scenes; alternative forms of labour and work; and postcapitalist and postwork futures.  

Andy’s entrance point into art and self-organised cultural activity was through his involvement in the Do-It-Yourself underground music scene. He continues to perform and tour the international DIY network, releases records through independent labels and composes music for theatre and film. As an artist he has exhibited at Tate Modern, MK Gallery and completed residencies in Italy and Istanbul. He is a regular contributor to journals, independent magazines, fanzines and blogs writing on socially engaged art and the politics of DIY culture, publishes with the art collective Black Dogs, and hosts a radio programme on art and social change called The Mirrored Hammer for BCB 106.6FM.

Andy lectured in Fine Art on the foundation course at Leeds College of Art prior to his appointment as Fellow in Music and continues to undertake visiting lecturing including for institutions including Bradford School of Art and Valand Academy, Gothenburg. Andy is a director of Art in Unusual Spaces (a Community Interest Company that programmes the use of public, underused and temporarily dormant spaces by artists) and has been on the board for various arts organisations including Wharf Chambers Co-Operative Club (an ethically run mixed use cultural space in Leeds), Lumen (audio visual arts company) and Leeds Visual Art Forum.
