Binocular Vision, Vision and Reading Clinic
The Binocular Vision, Vision and Reading Clinic is a specialist service which is typically only offered by some high street opticians.
Our clinic investigates the control and co-ordination of the two eyes and, where appropriate, provides treatment. It also specialises in detailed visual assessment for children and adults who are having difficulties with reading.
Binocular vision assessment
When a patient comes for an assessment in the Vision and Reading Clinic they will have a full binocular vision assessment to look for any anomalies or dysfunction of the focusing and movement systems of the eyes.
This will take between 1-2 hours.
If any binocular vision anomalies are found they can be managed with eye exercises and/or a spectacle (or contact lens) correction.
Follow-up appointments may be needed over a period of a few weeks or months.
Binocular vision clinic charges
There is a fee of £20.00 for the Binocular vision clinic. This includes follow-up appointments for up to 1 year. If overlays are prescribed, they can be purchased from the clinic.
Appointments
Patients must be referred to the Binocular Vision, Vision and Reading Clinic by their eye care practitioner or the Eye Clinic's Primary Care clinic, as a result of symptoms or signs of a binocular vision anomaly.
Eye care practitioners can refer patients via the Microsoft form.
Appointment checklist
To provide you with the best possible care, it is helpful if you bring the following with you to your appointment:
- your last spectacle prescription,
- all spectacles and contact lenses you currently use,
- list of your current medication,
- your GP's details.
Dyslexia
Whilst we can help alleviate some or all of the visual symptoms experienced by many patients with dyslexia, we are not able to assess or treat dyslexia or any other specific learning difficulty.
We do see many individuals with these problems and the aim of the Vision and Reading Clinic is to minimize the effects of any visual problems associated with reading.
We cannot cure dyslexia but we can help a proportion of individuals overcome some or all of the visual problems that further hinder their reading capability.
Vision and reading clinic charges
We aim to keep costs as low as possible. Returnable deposits may be required for some eye exercise equipment.
The initial binocular vision assessment, coloured overlay assessment and any follow-up appointments required can be undertaken in the student teaching clinics under the supervision of qualified optometrists at a nominal charge of £20.00. Please allow up to two hours for these appointments.
