Enhanced examination regulations applicable from May 2016

Mobile phones and other e-devices not permitted during examinations — includes smart watches and programmable calculators.

The University has tightened up its examination procedures to further enhance the security and integrity of its examinations. The wearing of Smart Watches and/or use of programmable calculators is not permitted during an examination. The University expects all candidates who are sitting examinations to leave their mobile phone and/or other E-devices (Smart watches/programmable calculators) at home and not bring them to the examination.

Should a candidate be in possession of a mobile phone and/or other E-devices (Smart watches/programmable calculators) it must be switched off and left in a bag or coat pocket in the designated area of the examination venue before the candidate goes to their allocated seat.

Candidates will not be permitted to have a mobile phone and/or other E-devices (Smart watches/programmable calculators) in their possession or on or beneath their examination desk during the examination.

Candidates must hand their mobile phone and/or other E-devices (Smart watches/programmable calculators) to the examination invigilator at the start of the examination if they are not in possession of a bag or coat.

Should a mobile phone and/or other E-devices (Smart watches/programmable calculator) ring during an examination it will be deemed a suspected breach of University Regulations on the Conduct and Invigilation of Examination and will be reported back to the University.

If you are not sure whether your calculator is programmable or not check out the guidance or ask the examination invigilator before the start of the examination.

Time restrictions to be applied when leaving an examination.

The University expects all candidates who are sitting examinations to not have to leave the examination venue e.g. to use the toilet during the examination. Restrictions will be applied to only allow toilet breaks within the time periods already enforced in the Regulations and as outlined below:

  • candidates are not permitted to leave this examination until the end (for examinations lasting less than one hour);
  • candidates are not permitted to leave this examination during the first 30 minutes or last 15 minutes (for examinations lasting one hour);
  • candidates are not permitted to leave this examination during the first hour or last 15 minutes (for examinations lasting more than one hour).

Personal belongings

You must leave all personal belongings in the designated area in the examination venue. This includes items such as mobile phones, smart watches, programmable calculators as well as items of clothing, bags and coats. The wearing of headgear during an examination is forbidden (except for religious or cultural reasons) and all such clothing including scarves must be removed and left in the designated area before proceeding to your seat.

Any candidate bringing personal belongings or items into an examination venue do so at their own risk.
