Updating Cards

Why?

The Salto access control system operational at the University of Bradford is a modern and flexible system that stores access information and permissions on users cards. The virtual network that controls the locks consists of a combination of online network connected locks, usually square silver readers (pictured), and battery operated locks. Both read and write information to the card each time the card is presented to a card reader. This encrypted data includes audit information, battery status and barring lists which results in offline locks being updated regularly without the need for physically updating the locks.

Salto On-Line Reader.

When additional access is added or removed, access permissions have been extended or time limits amended, this information is stored on the card and that data needs to be updated. This is done by the card holders at one of the online card readers.

How?

To update your card present it to a silver-coloured Salto online reader, these are positioned at the entrances to all of the main University buildings and many corridors (a full list is maintained below).

Hold your card against the reader for approximately 5 seconds until the blue lights cease flashing. Keep your card stationary. Once the blue light stops flashing, the colour will change to either red or green.

If the light turns green your access has been correctly assigned and the system is fully configured for you and you have entry to that particular lock. If the light turns red after flashing blue, this indicates that your card has been updated but that you do not have permission to enter that particular reader.

Please do not wave your card in front of the reader. If the card is removed before the update is complete then your ID card can become corrupted.
