Supporting Cycling 4 All

Students, graduates and lecturers from the School of Media, Design & Technology are taking part and getting behind the latest Cycle 4 All challenge; a 150 mile 'Coast to Coast ride'.

Disability cycling club, Cycling 4 All, based at the University of Bradford Students' Union, is embarking on a challenging 152 mile bike ride on adapted bikes from Morecambe to Flamborough Head between June 3 and 7.

So far the cycling club has raised £2,500 to fund a "dream" coast-to-coast bike ride for five of its members, and now wants to raise a further £3,500 to expand the work of the group.

Jess Waite, project assistant at Cycling 4 All, said: "The cyclists have been training since October, and are dedicated to completing the challenge. We are the first university to do this, and we are hoping to generate a lot of interest in the ride.”

It is much more expensive than it would be for non-disabled riders, as each one needs at least two people - a qualified lead rider and a support worker - to make the journey with them. It is the ultimate challenge for them, and we're delighted to be able to make their dream come true."

In total there are 13 riders, in that number are School of Media, Design and Technology lecturers Patrick Allen and Dave Robison, who will act as Ride Leader and Support Rider.

The team also includes several students and alumni from the school: third year Media Technology and Production student, John Walton, will ride alongside Digital Media graduate, Will Jones, as a support rider.

John explained how important the challenge is to him:

“To me the Coast to Coast means achievement and defiance; because as disabled cyclists we are all defying the odds to be in the position we are in today.”

One of the riders taking part will be aiming to complete the challenge using a hand bike, with others using a mixture of trikes and mountain bikes.
