Bradford's Big Screen

Bradford's Big Screen

Big screens are visible in the centre of many major cities across the UK. From September 2013 the big screen in Bradford has been handed over from the BBC to Bradford Council and UNESCO City of Film. City of Film has since teamed up with the University of Bradford to manage and coordinate the day-to-day running, making the Bradford big screen the only one to be managed by a University in the UK.

Our very own Digital Media Working Academy located in the School of Media, Design and Technology is the beating heart of the big screen; from sourcing content, scheduling, coordinating and editing new content to the logistical aspects, much of the work involved is coordinated by our students, graduates and staff.

The partnership has already provided opportunities for four graduates and current students to work on the big screen in gaining valuable work experience. Stefan Necula, graduate from the School of Media, Design and Technology works as Content Editor in sourcing new material and getting it ready to go on to the big screen. Speaking about the experience he said:

“The experience has been great, so far I have been working on it for six months and it has been completely different to any other work experience I have done before.  I hope that once I finish working on the Big Screen it will have given me a unique experience to continue my production career.”

Along with Stefan three more students and graduate have also been working on the big screen:

Rachel Hobbs, graduate in MA Digital Filmmaking edits local content which has already been produced and prepares it for the big screen.

Vytautas Aleksandras Rudys, graduate from the School of Media, Design and Technology edits the content and converts it to the correct formats.

Anna Laurika, a current student studying at the School of Media, Design and Technology has been involved in designing and creating the big screen website.

MA Digital Filmmaking student Himarsha Chathura Ukwatta, has also won the monthly competition giving anybody the chance to get their film shown on the big screen. Himarsha's film was chosen for it elegantly capturing the colourful changes to the Autumn season whilst filmed at Bradford's Lister Park.

Please visit the Bradford Big Screen website for more details, and find out how it is working to benefit the City of Bradford.
