BIOGRAPHY +

EDUCATION: graduated with BSc (Hons) Applied Mathematics (St Andrews, 1979) followed by PhD (St Andrews, 1984) in Computational Applied Mathematics supported by a CASE Award resourced by British Gas MRS (modelling synthetic natural gas production).

EMPLOYMENT: first academic position as Professor Auxiliar in Departamento de Estatistica, Investigacao Operacional e Computacao (DEIOC) at the Universidade de Lisboa, 1984-85 (required lecturing in Portuguese). Returned to UK as Lecturer in Mathematics (University of Manchester, 1986) and then, at the University of Bradford, as Lecture in Mathematics (1987), Senior Lecturer in Mathematics (1995), Reader in Engineering Mathematics (2002), and Personal Chair in Engineering Mathematics (2004). Appointed Dean of School of Engineering, Design, and Technology (2008-2013), and Interim Dean of School of Engineering and Informatics (2013-2014).

RESEARCH: current interests focus upon numerical optimisation (multi-disciplinary (MDO), response surface modelling, evolutionary methods, highly-constrained design spaces). Applications include engine calibration, model-based condition monitoring, petro-chem refinery process, and algorithm development. Research activity supports the delivery of a Master's module in Design Optimisation. I am a reviewer for the Georgian National Science Foundation, and referee for a numerical of good academic journals.

TEACHING: lecture across all engineering disciplines and stages in which engineering mathematics is required. For 2015/16 this comprised:

ENG1312L Engineering Mathematics (Chemical, Mechanical & Automotive, Medical, Intelligent Systems & Robotics), class size circa 150
ENG2307L Further Engineering Mathematics and Statistics (Mechanical & Automotive), class size circa 65
ENG4029M Design Optimisation (MSc & Stage 4 MEng, across all disciplines), class size circa 75

I coordinate the Mathematics Subject Team for the School of Engineering, and with colleagues in EECS am looking at how we might maximise the potential of the Faculty's cross-cutting theme of 'applied mathematics'.

INTERNATIONAL: Broader professional interests and activities include transnational education, partnership development, and internationalisation.

Lead internationalisation activity within the Faculty (partnerships, taught programmes, recruitment, etc.) and manage student exchange programmes for the School of Engineering.

Lecture at Sichuan University (Chengdu, China), delivering a Masters-level summer school course, and deliver an MSc module at Wuhan University of Technology (China).

Linked to TNE I have worked with NCUK for some 15 years (as Senior Mathematics Examiner), and I currently chair their Delivery Quality Committee. NCUK deliver International Foundation Year and Diploma programmes in country for students aspiring to study in the UK. The University of Bradford is a Trustee of NCUK.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT: mentor new and established academic colleagues, informal mentor for senior academic promotion case developments.
