Ken Loach, the Yorkshire Festival and ukuleles

June in Bradford has everything from harps to trance to ukuleles. And could this be the month that Sunbridge Wells finally opens?

On Saturday 4 June Love Apple hosts Trinity Trance - which Bradford Review says is Bradford's first all-night trance event in a decade.

Then after a couple of hours sleep get up in time to see Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach at 12:30 on Sunday at the Picturehouse. This is a pay-what-you-can screening of the behind the scenes documentary, which follows the making of Ken Loach's Palme d'Or winning film I, Daniel Blake. There's also a Q&A after the screening with David Braley, star of the director's 1969 film Kes.

Be part of it - Yorkshire, that is

The 2016 Yorkshire Festival takes place from 16 June - 3 July, with a range of events across Yorkshire, from a musical tour of fish and chip shops, to projections of a "contemporary utopia", to talking statues.

In Bradford, Lister Park and City Park will host Indian gardens painted on the paving by artist Imran Qureshi from Pakistan. Qureshi will be illuminating "the complex interplay between Islamic and European history and culture," by creating zones "in which light and dark mix, horror and hope collide".

The Nile Project - 18 June at Alhambra Theatre - brings together musicians from 11 countries along the Nile in East Africa to "create the new sound of a shared Nile identity". This sounds like an unmissable event.

You'll also need to make sure you get to the Alhambra on 16 June, to see the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. They've been at it for more than 30 years, turning music from all genres into ukulele masterpieces.

Going deeper underground

The long awaited Sunbridge Wells development is hopefully nearing its finish date. We are all looking forward to this new tunnel complex of bars, shops, and even a brewery, opening this summer. Have a look at the story so far on their Facebook page:
