The aim of this module is:
- To provide students with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of human resource management (HRM) theory and practice
- To provide students with the opportunity to explore and analyse different approaches and techniques to human resource management
The learning outcomes for the module are to enable the student to:
- Critically analyse different theories and approaches to human resource management
- Critically analyse and evaluate different HRM techniques
- Critically evaluate HRM theories and tools to effectively manage human resources
- Analyse and apply different HRM developments and practices in the health and social care sectors
- Develop skills in the analysis of Human Resource issues and the formulation of appropriate HRM responses

The syllabus for the module includes:
- An introduction to the different theories and models of Human Resource Management
- HRM in health and social care
- Strategic Human Resource Management
- Human Resource Planning and factors affecting this; workforce issues (eg planning the future dementia workforce), recruitment, selection
and retention policies and procedures
- Human resource management and labour market analysis, the concepts of flexibility, alternative ways of working; skills mix and skill substitution
- Managing equality and diversity
- Learning and development
- Strategic aspects of performance, performance management and reward; performance review, performance development plans, managing absence and attendance, managing difficult performance
- Developing and sustain employee engagement
- Emerging issues in HRM; work-life balance, the future of work; sustainable HR management practices
Learning and assessment
A 4000 word applied written assignment which allows a student to critically analyse a chosen aspect of HRM.
