Luke Burgess

Why did you apply to the University of Bradford?  Please include the following - your impression of the university and the city and what did you enjoy most about your time in Bradford?

I applied to the University of Bradford due to its continued development into one of the top universities in engineering and its ability to help you gain a placement and a job once graduated.  My first impression of the university was how focused it was on becoming an environmentally friendly university. The thing I most enjoyed with my time at the university was the “Bridge Project” where we had to design our own bridge and build it.

Why did you choose that particular course?  What did you like and enjoy most about the course?

I chose my course as I was interested in a job which had various aspects of the industry and a chance to be on site and within a business environment which is constantly evolving. Personally the thing I enjoyed most about the course is the application of it within the working environment

What tips would you give to prospective students (about the course at the University of Bradford and the university itself)?

I would recommend it due to it continually looking to improve and develop with the industry and its commitment to excellence.

What support have you received from Career Development Services / Placement Staff?

I received a step-by-step programme of how to write your CV to how to succeed at an interview; this help with the one-on-one meetings and vast amount of resources helped me succeed in gaining a placement with Carillion Plc.

What action are you taking to improve your employability whilst at University?

I have continually worked part time and competed in sports improving my personal skills and will be aiming to complete my Eng tech by the end of my placement putting me on the ladder to gaining my chartership.

What advice would you give to your fellow students about finding placement and work experience opportunities?

I would advise to not wait around and wait for the placement offers to come to you but to take the initiative and start applying and going through the process as early as possible.

Tell us about your current placement.

I am currently on placement with Carillion Rail plc; the project I have been assigned to was what I was interested in experiencing.  I am on the Kettering to Corby rail line which is the main line to London, extending the track, reinforcing embankments, building new platforms, replacing bridges and various other things.

How will the placement year benefit you when you return to study at the University of Bradford?

It will benefit me massively as I will be able to use the placement practical experience to understand the lectures better. Also, with Carillion’s approval, I hope to be able to do my final year project based on the work at Carillion.
