Why did you apply for the Summer Experience programme?

I first heard of this programme during my foundation year, and I thought to myself why not ! I strongly believe that we should not take any opportunity for granted and try our best to get what we want. The Summer Experience Programme is a great way to build your CV, increase your skills and confidence, and earn money at the same time.

What did you enjoy?

I mostly enjoyed communicating with international students before and after their arrival to the UK. I genuinely have a passion for helping people. Therefore, you would usually see me walking up and down the Great Hall where I used to work trying to solve unexpected problems such as last minute arrivals. Also, I got to know a lot of student ambassadors coming from different parts of the world, listening to their stories and university experience was something I found rewarding.

Was there anything you did not enjoy?

The beginning of the internship was a full-time from home role because of the pandemic and its restrictions. Personally, I can achieve more by being outdoors and experiencing direct encounters with people.

What support did you receive from the Career and Employability Team?

The employability team has been very supportive even before I applied for the summer experience as they helped me edit and improve my CV to look more professional. During the summer experience, Helen Bradley - who is a member of the employability team-- always kept in touch with me to see if I needed any advice or support.

All kinds of internships are beneficial. However, if you have some goals in mind, prioritise your interests and search accordingly. Always look for opportunities and don’t be upset if your application gets rejected. It happens to all of us.

What tips would you give to prospective students when looking for an internship or placement?

  • Request an appointment with the Career and Employability Team to have your CV reviewed.
  • Inform the team that you are looking for an internship as they’ll be a great help.

Are you doing anything else to improve your employability whilst at university?

I am doing online courses alongside my degree as well as taking advantage of summer breaks by taking internships, work experience, and study abroad opportunities.

Also, increasing your network of contacts and  can massively help you get employment.

Lastly, always be a hard worker who gives their best and doors will open for you :)

Anything else you would like to add?

The university isn’t just a place to get your degree. It is a place where you should make the most use of by knowing more people, seeking support from the employability team to get a job, join a society or a sports club, etc. Getting into university and leaving with a degree is definitely an accomplishment, but there is much more you can get.
