Pamela's experiences

Why did you apply for the Summer Experience Internship?

I applied for a Summer Experience internship to gain real-life experience in a business and marketing-related role.

What did you enjoy about the Internship?

I enjoyed working as part of a team and having regular meetings with the management team. They gave us several opportunities to develop our creativity and communication skills. They also made sure that each of us was learning and that we developed both professionally and personally throughout the duration of the internship.

What tips would you give to prospective students?

I would advise everyone to start applying for different positions early so that you keep your options open. If you are not sure about what you want to do, you can speak to members of staff in Career and Employability Services for guidance.

What support did you receive from Career and Employability Services?

I was able to schedule mock interviews with a staff member from Career and Employability Services to build my confidence and practice for upcoming interviews. The staff members helped me to develop my CV and cover letters for job applications. The staff would keep me updated on suitable jobs, which was very useful because in the end, that is how I managed to secure a summer internship.

Keep your options open. If you are not sure about what you want to do, you can speak to members of staff in the Career and Employability Services for guidance.

What actions are you taking to improve your employability whilst at university?

I work as a Student Ambassador and volunteer as a student representative to voice the concerns of my peers to staff members in our faculty. These two roles give me the opportunity to develop my communication, time management and organisation skills, which will be helpful in the future.

What advice would you give to your fellow students about finding placement and work experience opportunities?

Apply to as many roles as you can and make sure you do enough research about the companies you have applied to. Keep a record of all the job descriptions for each role so that you can use them to prepare for interviews if your applications are successful.

Any last words?

Do not be discouraged if you do not get a certain job that you were interested in. Stay positive and look for other opportunities with the help of the Career and Employability Services. When you secure an internship, enjoy what you are doing and make the most of every opportunity to learn something new.
