Putting the 'me' in Dementia Studies – Michael Andrews

Michael Andrews was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Health in December 2022 in recognition of his significant commitment to the field of Dementia research and education, working closely with the University and with Alzheimer’s UK to this end.

Michael, a former soldier and truck driver, became involved with the University after he was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia and was asked to be part of a research group for a 12-week Journeying Through Dementia project.

Michael is an inspirational figure. His example of resilience in the face of the most difficult circumstances challenges us all to delve deep, find our inner strength and rise to the hurdle's life places in our path. We are very lucky that we get to work with him as one of our Experts by Experience.

How we work together

Since Michael’s involvement in the first research group, he has been involved in numerous research projects as an Expert by Experience for the University of Bradford’s Centre for Applied Dementia Studies, as well as sharing his experience with physiotherapy, pharmacy and occupational therapy students.

The Experts by Experience group work together with the University in research, education, and training, regularly attending events hosted by the University and contributing towards a quarterly newsletter.

Most recently, Michael and the group have been involved in developing a first-of-its-kind course, designing a new MSc module for health and social care professionals called Understanding the Me in Dementia, which tells staff and students what people living with dementia really want them to know about the condition.

I love the work I do with dementia. I’ve learned so much about myself; I’ve learned I can stand up in front of people and deliver a speech and have an impact. I particularly enjoy being involved with the University of Bradford because the work that goes on there is fascinating. Without that first research project, I’m sure I would be in a care home now. My hope is that people who are diagnosed will never have to experience what I went through.
