Inspiring the next generation of Civil and Structural Engineers – Kate Hall

Kate Hall was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering in July 2022 in recognition of her exceptional contribution to engineering and as a successful female alumna and role model within this field.

Kate specialises in the leadership of major infrastructure projects with large multi-disciplinary teams and is currently the project director for Arup on the HS2 London Tunnels project, leading a team of 1200 engineers. She is passionate about delivering infrastructure within the sustainable development goals using innovation and collaboration to drive our journey to net zero carbon this decade.

Reflecting on my time at Bradford, I cherish the memories of camaraderie, the inspiring mentors and lecturers, and the serene moors that offered a retreat into nature for hiking and climbing. It’s a holistic experience that shapes not just engineers, but individuals with a deep appreciation for the world around them.

How we work together

Kate understands first-hand the importance of access to industry and the value of site visits in enhancing the understanding of how taught theoretical principles are applied in practice.

In February 2024, Kate arranged a site-visit for 30 current engineering students to visit the HS2 Area West site in Ruislip, West London. At the active construction site, students experienced live construction examples of forming the piling and earth retaining structure, the construction of deep ventilation shafts and a large cut and cover tunnel. An onsite industry expert gave them a technical presentation and Arup colleagues answered their career questions.

Following her graduation, Kate has been an avid supporter and familiar face at the University. She is keen to share her experiences and inspire the next generation of engineers, especially women who are currently underrepresented in the industry. In addition to arranging site visits for students, Kate also adds to the student experience by attending and speaking at University events, advising on the curriculum, and participating in University projects such as the University’s 50 Years 50 Stories campaign.
