Hello! My name is Rashidat, and I’m a 39-year-old student embarking on an exciting new journey.

Last year, I decided to begin studying BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) at the University of Bradford. With a background in business management, this was a huge shift for me. After over a decade away from education, returning to university felt like a giant leap, but it has already been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.

Why nursing?

My decision to pursue nursing wasn't a sudden one; it was born from my lived experiences, particularly within the BAME community. I repeatedly witnessed a gap in clear communication and a lack of accessible health information. I found this often led to misunderstandings, which resulted in poorer health outcomes.

This gap ignited a desire within me to be part of the solution. I wanted to become a compassionate, communicative healthcare professional who could help bridge that gap and ensure every patient feels heard, understood, and cared for. My business background has given me strong organisational skills, but my heart is now firmly set on making a tangible difference in people's lives.

Finding my feet

I won’t lie, the thought of starting at the University of Bradford was equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking.

I was aware that I would be older than many of the other students, and I was also conscious that I had been out of the academic world for over ten years. I worried about fitting in and keeping up.

Those first-day jitters were very real! However, the University’s Step Up to HE programme was an absolute lifesaver. It was specifically designed to help students like me navigate the University system, refresh our study skills, and most importantly, connect with others. It was during this programme that I met my first solid group of friends. We were all in the same boat, feeling a mix of anticipation and anxiety, and that shared experience created an instant bond.

Fitting in and building a community

The Step Up to HE programme was the foundation, and I made a conscious effort to get involved.

I started volunteering in the library, which not only helped me familiarise myself with essential resources but also introduced me to a wider circle of students and staff from different courses.

I also joined a society, which was revamped by me, and it has been fantastic meeting like-minded people who share my passion for radio, podcasting, and content creation. Remember to always put yourself out there, as there is always someone looking to connect. Clubs, societies, and volunteering are the perfect platforms!

Looking forward with confidence

Returning to education as an Adult Learner definitely has its challenges, but the support at Bradford has been incredible. The nerves I felt on my first day have mostly been replaced with a sense of purpose. I have built a supportive network, rediscovered my love for learning, and am on a clear path towards a career that truly matters to me. To anyone hesitating about taking that next step, embrace the journey. You belong here, and your life experiences are your greatest strength.
