Mohamed, an Egyptian student at the University of Bradford, embraced opportunities in France and Japan. He tells us how he gained invaluable cultural insight and professional growth.

My name is Mohamed. I’m an Egyptian student currently studying BSc (Hons) International Business and Management at the University of Bradford.

As part of my course, I had the opportunity to take part in a semester exchange abroad as well as an international placement — two incredible opportunities that have allowed me to grow both academically and personally. Over the past year, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience both: a semester exchange in France and an internship in Japan, supported every step of the way by the University’s International Opportunities Team.

Semester exchange in France

I first decided to apply for the semester exchange programme because I had friends in my second year who had already taken part and spoke so highly of the experience. I reached out to Harry, Carlos, and Lucy from the International Opportunities Team, and they were incredibly helpful and guided me through every step of the process.

My semester abroad took me to NEOMA Business School in Reims, France. The academic experience there was very different from the UK. While in the UK most assessments are based on assignments with fewer exams, in France, there was a stronger focus on presentations and formal exams. This pushed me to work on my public speaking skills and adapt to a different style of learning.

Life in France was equally enriching outside the classroom. The French are incredibly social and welcoming, and the University had a lively, friendly environment. Living and studying there gave me the opportunity to improve my presentation skills, communication skills, and cultural awareness, as well as my ability to adapt quickly to new environments.

I always encourage students to apply for the exchange programme. It's a truly rewarding experience, and Bradford provides excellent funding and support throughout, making sure you never feel alone in the process. I never regretted my decision for a single moment.

Internship in Japan

Not long after, I had the chance to embark on a completely different adventure an internship abroad. The University provided me with a list of 27 countries to choose from, and I selected Japan.

Once again, Bradford supported me with generous funding to make the journey possible. After going through the application and interview process, I was accepted by a company in Japan.

During my internship, I worked in a cross-functional role within the company, supporting both the marketing and operations teams. I was involved in tasks such as market research, assisting with promotional materials, and helping to coordinate internal processes to improve efficiency. This role gave me valuable insights into Japanese business culture and work ethics, as well as the opportunity to apply my business knowledge in a completely new environment.

Japan was unlike anywhere I had been before. It was a completely different culture from Europe. I was able to experience Asia for the first time and see life from a whole new perspective. I learned basic words in Japanese, met people from a wide range of nationalities, religions, and ethnic backgrounds, and developed a deeper appreciation for diversity.

Professionally, I discovered how different the Japanese CV format and application process are compared to Europe. I learned how to adapt to new work cultures, adjust to a completely different cuisine and lifestyle, and manage my daily life in an environment far from home.

As an Egyptian student studying in the UK, having the opportunity to complete a semester exchange in Europe and then gain work experience in Asia has been life changing. These experiences helped me develop global networking skills, adaptability, resilience, and cross-cultural communication skills that I will carry with me throughout my career.

Final thoughts

Both experiences were incredible in their own unique ways. They pushed me out of my comfort zone, broadened my horizons, and gave me memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

As well as working towards my degree, I’ve also been able to take part in these amazing opportunities — proof that the University of Bradford not only offers academic excellence, but also provides additional ways for students to develop their skills, explore the world, and prepare for their future careers.

If you ever get the chance to apply for a study abroad or overseas internship take it. The University of Bradford’s International Opportunities Team will guide you and provide the funding and support you need to make it a reality.
