Assessment and External Examining

Assessment is a key element in the setting and maintenance of academic standards. It is the means by which judgements are formed as to what extent students have achieved the intended learning outcomes of a programme, or part of a programme. These judgements form the basis for evaluating student performance, for classification where appropriate, and for the award of a qualification.

Assessment is also important for learning, through the assessment task itself, and also through the guidance and support provided by the tutor, and feedback and feedforward.

Crucially, assessment is dependent upon explicit programme, level and module learning outcomes and judgements must be based upon the extent to which these are achieved by the student.
