How did you get your current job – what were the steps you took from leaving university?
After graduating my aim was to make myself known to prospective employers, so I registered with recruitment agencies which dealt with specialist areas of the market e.g. web, graphic, online. By being pro-active in job-hunting, and ensuring my CV summarised my key attributes and achievements, I was offered a job as Product Content Executive at Furniture Choice.
How relevant was your subject of study in securing your current job?
My degree was crucial to securing my current job as the course incorporated both creative and technical elements e.g. imaging and design, which I use in my work every day. I feel my degree has given me a great foundation for working in an online/e-commerce environment, enabling me to fulfil my passion for all things digital.
Describe a typical working day in your current job.
Each working day is different as there are various tasks to be done throughout the day, making it productive and challenging. Every day I begin by checking my e-mails, setting my priorities and speaking to my supervisor about planned activity.
I am part of a team and work very well with my co-workers, who are always happy to help if I need assistance. To ensure we are on track and organised, regular team meetings are held to discuss workload and monitor progress.
How has your role developed and what are your career ambitions?
My role has developed over time at Furniture Choice. Initially, when I joined the company I was mainly finding my feet, using the different systems and familiarising myself with the way of working at Furniture Choice.
Now that I have a clear sense of how tasks are done and I’m familiar with the company’s e-commerce platform, I am able to carry out multiple tasks whilst continually broadening my knowledge. My career ambition at this stage is to be the best at what I do and gain recognition for it.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I like the fact that my role is varied and that every day is not the same. I also enjoy exploring programs/techniques which I haven’t got hands on experience with, in order to learn.
My favourite thing about Furniture Choice is I get to work with people who are fun and are easy to get along with - it is really important to have a good working environment.
What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
As a relatively new employee the most challenging part for me has been understanding new processes, but I find using the e-commerce system on a regular basis and making notes really helps.
What were the highlights from your time at the University of Bradford?
My most memorable time at university was when I worked with a great group of people to produce a short film for a module. My role in the production involved daily meetings, planning and being on set to assist with lighting etc.
Working as a group and contributing to the end result really helped to boost my confidence, as well as the ability to work and liaise with people from different backgrounds. This is something that I have taken on board in my career.
What advice would you have for other students who would like to get into this career?
It is important to identify what your skills are and where you need to improve. You need to be willing to develop your knowledge and research in your own time. All in all be prepared to work, learn and grow.
