Xanthe Mallett, BSc Archaeological Sciences 2002

Senior Lecturer in Forensic Criminology at the University of New England, Author and Television Presenter

After graduating from Bradford in 2002 Xanthe Mallett has established herself as a leading forensic anthropologist, criminologist and television presenter. She is a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Criminology at the University of New England and, alongside teaching and inspiring students in the lecture theatre, has undertaken casework and research specialising in human craniofacial biometrics and hand identification, and behaviour patterns of paedophiles, particularly online. In her professional capacity she has helped to solve a number of high profile cases that gained national and international press coverage and in which paedophiles were successfully prosecuted partially as a result of hand comparison evidence.

Ding Lei, MSc International Business and Management 2004

Manager, University of Bradford China and East Asia Office

About thirteen years ago, Ding Lei decided to take some advice given to him by his mother's friend to go and study abroad. He chose Bradford as his preferred destination to study for an MSc in International Business and Management. After graduating in 2004, he soon found himself promoting UK education in China. This led to him reconnecting with his alma mater and he is now managing the University of Bradford's China and East Asia Office. We caught up with Ding Lei to find out more about his journey as a student, coming to the UK, a graduate, and now as an employee of Bradford.

"I earned my Bradford PhD in philosophy in 2000, at the age of 53. Since then I have been engaged in a number of interesting activities. In 2001-2002 I worked as a consultant for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of its Accounting Reform project in Bosnia. I spent 13 months there, alternating between Sarajevo and Banja Luka. I was placed in charge of assisting the Finance Ministry convert the country to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). I was also in charge of helping all 8 universities upgrade their accounting curricula to include International Standards."

Amn studied both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Bradford. "I did apply to other universities, but when I received my results I decided that I wanted to stay local! "I was able to stay close to my family and friends. Most of the friends I made at university weren’t from Bradford, so I got to meet a lot of different people."
