You will need to discuss
your proposed field of research in some detail with the Department.
The Department must ensure that the University can provide the necessary
supervision, equipment and research materials.
Your initial application
should take the form of a letter setting out your education to date,
your existing and expected qualifications, and a fairly detailed research
proposal (probably two or three pages). You should send this to the
contact name given on the individual
research pages for each Department.
If accepted, you may then
be asked to fill in a form so that the University's approval and registration
procedures can be completed.
The majority of research
students start in September, but it is possible to start at any time
during the year. Typical periods of registration for full-time research
are fifteen months (minimum twelve) for an MPhil, and three years
for a PhD.
