Why did you apply for the Summer Experience Internship?
I saw it as an opportunity for me to gain some experience out in the industry. I wanted to understand the world of IT and what was out there for me, what working in IT would be like. The summer experience program was giving me a chance to work and experience what the real working was all about. It was only six weeks - what did I have to loose?
What did you enjoy about the Internship?
The variety of tasks and the range of exposure I got - it was exactly what I was looking for. It really helped me build my foundation knowledge and background in IT.
What tips would you give to prospective students?
Take time out to write your cv and cover letter properly. Well written CV's and CL's convey a positive message to potential employers and make a first good impression. It shows you are enthusiastic and willing to make an effort.
Be open minded and don't be afraid to try new things. Its okay if you don't like something - at least you gave it a go and learnt that a particular job / role wasn't quite your piece of cake.
Be positive! Treat everything as a learning curve - remember experience is experience and there's always so much to learn.
Make the most out of the career development services - the career advisers know their stuff and they are there to help.
What support did you receive from Career Development Services?
Let’s just say I wouldn't be where I am today without all of the advice, time and effort I received from everyone. Careers helped me with literally everything from finding a placement, writing my CV and CL to preparing for my interview.
What actions are you taking to improve your employability whilst at university?
I'm currently doing a placement year - one of the best decisions I ever made
What advice would you give to your fellow students about finding placement and work experience opportunities?
This is your time to learn and explore. Make the most of it.
If you’re struggling to secure yourself a placement or keep getting rejected - don’t give up! Ask for feedback, improve your application and practice before an interview.
Any last words?
Anyone who is serious about finding a job after they graduate would be very silly to pass up on an opportunity like this.
No matter how many times career advisers or tutors emphasize on the importance of having experience of the industry you can’t comprehend or understand the value of what you gain from a placement until you have done one.
