The University commits to:

Students at the heart of learning and teaching

  • Provide you with a comprehensive induction to your programme of study, University support services, online resources and other information.
  • To support your induction we will introduce you to your Personal Academic Tutor/Principal Supervisor during induction.
  • Provide you with a timetable of your scheduled learning and teaching activities for the academic year.
  • Provide professional, knowledgeable, competent and appropriately qualified staff.
  • Provide you with regular scheduled contact with named academic staff, and access to other support to review and provide feedback on your achievements and help to plan your progress.
  • Listen to and act upon your opinions and feedback in order to encourage all members of the student body to assist in the continuous enhancement of the student experience and our academic provision.
  • Provide you with information about our academic regulations, and how to avoid plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct as soon as you commence your study. Where possible assessments will be marked anonymously.

Making Knowledge Work

  • Provide academic programmes which offer intellectual challenge and stimulation, are informed by cutting edge research and emphasise application, experiential learning and real world engagement to enable you to develop skills and attributes for your future careers.
  • Offer access to technologies that enhance and support your learning experience.
  • Encourage you to make full use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to complement the learning and teaching on your programme. The VLE will provide you with accessible and up-to-date learning resources, module handbooks and assessment information.
  • Use a range of learning and teaching approaches which are appropriate to your programme of study and a balanced range of assessments which clearly match the learning outcomes of the module and programme studied and challenge you intellectually and allow you to develop.
  • Provide you with a module handbook at the start of each module, with information on learning outcomes, teaching and assessment methods, and submission deadlines and requirements.
  • Give you access to a 360 days a year, 24/7 Library service that enhances your learning experience through a range of learning support facilities and up-to-date learning resources.

Developing Students

  • Provide you with quality feedback that enhances your academic development within 20 working days of summative assessments and ensure that you receive examination marks within 20 working days. Postgraduate Research Students will receive feedback on submitted work within a reasonable time period agreed between you and your supervisor.
  • Assist you in maximising your potential by providing you with careers and employability guidance with the opportunity of a placement or other work/volunteering experience during your studies.
  • Keep Wednesday afternoons free from study each week to encourage you to engage in extracurricular activities including volunteering, sports, societies any other suitable opportunities.
  • Provide access to a wide range of support services including UBU Advice Centre, Academic Skills Advice, Chaplaincy Services, Counselling Services, Disability Services, International Student Advice, Library and Information Skills Support, Money Advice, The Language Centre, Visa Support.

Diversity and Inclusivity

  • Provide inclusive curricula and learning opportunities, which engage and motivate you and enable you to achieve your potential regardless of background.
  • Provide an international experience, with opportunities to meet people from many cultures and backgrounds.
  • Respect the faiths of our community by seeking to avoid scheduling teaching, assessments and ceremonies during times that conflict with major faith-based obligations.
  • Celebrate the cultural diversity of our student body and the significance this has in supporting the development of students as global citizens.
  • Ensure that facilities, opportunities and learning materials are provided in a manner that is accessible to all students.
  • Provide access to support services and enabling facilities to support you on issues that surround your academic life and wellbeing.
