Peter Chapman

Biography

I specialise in finding and implementing technical solutions for difficult problems.

My background is in 3D animation for children’s television, where I helped develop original concepts like Rollie and Friends, Boy and Dinosaur, and Emily Button, as well as assets for various commercial projects including Hasbro’s Monopoly. I’ve worked across film, TV, and games, including leading studio-wide transitions from Lightwave and 3Ds Max to Maya.

As a Technical Director, my core responsibilities are rigging, tool development, lighting, rendering and automation however in reality, I often act as the problem-solver or fixer. I find and/or implement solutions that tackle technical bottlenecks and improve efficiency.

I have been working within the creative industry since 2008 and teaching/training since 2011. I share my methods and experience with higher education institutes in the UK and internationally, working closely with professional partners to bridge gaps between modelling, animation, lighting and rendering, and to introduce students of animation, games and creative industries as a force to be reckoned with.

I have an optimistic outlook on AI and emerging tech, seeing it as a way to support the creative process rather than replace it. It's important to understand the limitations of machine learning and prioritising humanity's unique creative ideas.

My approach to teaching prioritises critical thinking and professional readiness; preparing students for the realities of work in animation, games, and visual effects. My expectations of my students are also aligned with this goal where I encourage students to think outside the box, challenge everything and leave the University with the knowledge, skill and commitment that the creative industry demands.
