Research Excellence Framework (REF)

The faculty will be submitting to two Units of Assessment in the Research Excellence Framework.

Both of these areas were returned in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and were judged to have 50% of their work to be internationally excellent or world leading (3* or 4*). The vast majority of their work was deemed of international standard (2* and above). The work of staff across different Divisions in the faculty but with common research interests is managed by two faculty committees covering these two units of assessment.  Staff plans are monitored and co-ordinated within these committees and staff mentoring and support is provided as appropriate

Social Work and Social Policy brings together the work of staff across the faculty working on a range of issues largely but not exclusively from a national perspective. It manages and monitors the work of staff from a number of Divisions, including Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Policy and Social Work. Most staff covered by this committee are also active members of the Centre for Applied Social Research. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 95% of activity in this area was judged to be of 95% international standard (2* and above) and the work of the research cluster on Ethnicity, Families and Identity group was highlighted as world leading (4*).
