Aim

To create a fun 3D animation piece to introduce children to the pipe organ

The starting point was the story of Dan & The Magic Musician, developed to show children what it's like to play a pipe organ.

We used cutting-edge 3D modelling and animation software and a process called automatic design optimisation to create a 3D animation to the client's brief. Our process involved taking measurements of an existing container design (shape, material properties and wall thickness) and feeding these into a purpose-designed algorithm. Hundreds of possible designs were automatically generated before an optimised shape was identified.

Results

This animation won the BBC Education and Communities Partnership Award for Innovation. You can view the final animation at www.danmagic.org, or see our role in its creation in the 'Making Of' video below:
