Course Introduction

Individual Level 3 / Level M modules

These modules allow a range of healthcare professionals to develop and update their prescribing skills, and enhance their career prospects.

  • Prescribing for Healthcare Professionals allows nurses, midwives and pharmacists to record a professional qualification as an independent and supplementary prescriber with the NMC (V300) or GPhC. Successful physiotherapists, radiographers adn podiatrists can record a qualification with the HPC as a supplementary prescriber
  • Community Nurse Prescribing allows nurses and midwives to record a V150 qualification as a community nurse prescriber with the NMC

Course Syllabus

Modules:

Both modules will cover topics such as:

  • Consultation, Decision Making and Therapy including Referral
  • Legal Policy and Ethical Aspects
  • Professional Accountability and Responsibility
  • Prescribing in the Public Health Context
  • Basic and Applied Therapeutics (including Clinical Pharmacology and the Effects of Co-Morbidity)
  • Evidence-Based Practice and Clinical Governance in relation to Independent and Supplementary Prescribing
  • Influences on and Psychology of Prescribing
  • Prescribing in a Team Context

Special Features

Teaching Methods

Prescribing for Healthcare Professionals

  • 16 taught days in the University and 12 days of supervised clinical prescribing practice
  • 60 hours of individualised study, supported by tutorials and negotiated learning contracts

Community Nurse Prescribing

  • 10 taught days in the University and 10 days of supervised clinical prescribing practice with a community practitioner prescriber

Entry Requirements

Students will be selected on the basis of having met the requirements of the NMC, GPC or HPC for admission to prescribing modules.

Admission requirements vary according to professional background and module choice but include:

  • Valid registration on NMC Register as a nurse, midwife or community public health nurse, or registration with the HPC as an allied health professional, or registered pharmacist on the membership register of the GPC and/or Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland


Nurses – minimum of 3 years' experience since qualifying, including one year, immediately preceding the course, working in the area of practice in which they intend to prescribe.


Allied Health Professionals - minimum 3 years' experience as a qualified allied health professional.

The employing organisation must have assessed the applicant to be competent in their area of practice.

The applicant must also have demonstrated appropriate numeracy skills.

Level of English Required

IELTS at 6.5 or the equivalent
