Course Introduction

This suite of programmes provides competence-based training for GPs with a special interest and other advanced-level practitioners, such as nurse consultants and specialist nurses. Programmes are run by the NHS and are taught by specialist clinicians.

Course Syllabus

MSc for Practitioners with a Special Interest

All Modules are Core (C)

120 credits equivalent to PG Diploma PLUS 60 Credits (2 x (C) Modules):

  • Research Methods in Health and Social Care (30 Credits) (C)
  • Dissertation (incorporating the research study) (30 Credits) (C)

PG Diploma Part-Time

60 Credits (2 x (C) Modules)

  • Applied Methodologies, Patient Pathways, Critical Appraisal, PPI, Audit (30 Credits) (C)
  • Improvement Methodologies in Healthcare, Capacity and Demand Management, Change Methodologies (30 Credits) (C)

Special Features

  • These programmes allow practitioners to develop their skills in an area of interest through three clinical modules and one service improvement module

  • There are seven mandatory teaching days in or near Bradford (off campus). All additional learning is work based in the practitioner's locality, making these programmes very flexible

Placement opportunities

A hospital placement must be found for each module for a minimum of 14 sessions per module and must be supervised by a consultant in the area of interest.

Entry Requirements

PG Certificate

  • Practitioners must demonstrate interest and experience in their area of special interest, and have the support of the local specialist consultant (who will act as their mentor) and the support of secondary care staff, acknowledgement from the Acute Trust must also be made available

PG Diploma

  • Students must be working as a GP or specialist practitioner with an interest in their specialist area.

MSc

  • A Diploma for Practitioners with a Special Interest, or another qualification or similar content, as approved by the University of Bradford
  • Applicants from students with other qualifications or prior knowledge from experiential learning will be considered

Level of English Required

IELTS at 6.5 or the equivalent
