Course Introduction

DPharm (Doctorate in Pharmacy) / MSc Advanced Pharmacy Practice

The professional doctorate in pharmacy (DPharm) is an exciting route for pharmacists working in any field to achieve a doctorate qualification by undertaking advanced study in pharmacy practice. 

The course is undertaken part-time whilst you continue to work in your chosen field of pharmacy practice. The DPharm course is offered in two Stages: Stage 1 consists of a taught programme, and Stage 2 involves a research project.

Along with the taught elements of Stage 1 you will be developing the depth and breadth of knowledge in your particular area of practice and in doing so, will add considerably to the value of the role you hold in your current employment.

Stage 1 successfully undertaken on its own will lead to the award of MSc in Advanced Pharmacy Practice. If you wish to study for the DPharm you will be required to successfully complete both Stages 1 and 2.

  • Practice Unit 1 (30 Credits)
  • Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (20 Credits)
  • Quantitative Research: Statistical Data Analysis (20 Credits)

Study Period 2 - 80 Credits:

  • Practice Unit 2 (30 Credits)
  • Professional Leadership in Pharmacy (30 Credits)
  • Qualitative Research: Methods and Skills (20 Credits)

Study Period 3 - 30 Credits:

  • Practice Unit 3 (30 Credits)

Stage 2 (360 Credits)

Study Period 4 - 30 Credits:

  • Research Proposal (30 Credits)

Study Period 4 & 5:

Entry Requirements

  • Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • A Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Master’s qualification related to pharmaceutical practice (or equivalent). Experienced practitioners with at least five years’ post-qualifying experience will also be considered
  • Agreement by your employer to pay the fees and to provide financial support for the duration of the registration. Students who plan to pay their own fees must provide evidence that their employer supports their application

Level of English Required

IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent.
