Study mode Blended Learning, which combines face to face delivery by lecture/seminar activity during residential sessions (two per year), supported by the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Course Introduction

NB - This course will run subject to minimum student numbers – please contact the School to enquire before application.

The programme is right for you if you are a senior officer responsible for coordinating or leading a multi-agency response to an emergency, be it from the police, fire and rescue services, health services, public sector agencies, or the military and are likely to face decisions involving life-and-death situations.

These decisions will have profound consequences for potential victims, responding organisations, local authorities, politicians and other stakeholders and sometimes must be made under extreme time pressure.

The course will prepare you for such situations requiring you to influence and take responsibility/accountability for major decision-making within an emergency and will assist you as a commander in an emergency.

  • Risk Assessment in a resilience context (10 Credits) (C)

  • The Incident Command System: UK Fire and Rescue Services (10 Credits) (O)

  • The programme offers an innovative approach to the training of senior managers in the area of emergency response and recovery
  • The programme has been specifically designed for senior practitioners who are required to manage an emergency involving a multi-agency response to an emergency, frequently facing life-and-death decisions

Entry Requirements

All candidates should have current professional experience within an emergency response organisation or equivalent.

Additionally applicants must have either:

  • a first degree from an approved University or an equivalent institution, or
  • the Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management, or
  • an appropriate Postgraduate qualification, or
  • a professional qualification, and evidence of advanced professional standing and experience

Level of English Required

IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent
