The MSc in Health Psychology is seeking accreditation by The British Psychological Society.

Completion of the Master's programme will provide the basis (Stage one) for entry to further professional training (Stage 2) which provides eligibility towards Chartered Membership of the BPS (CPsychol), full membership of the Division of Health Psychology of the BPS and professional practice as a Health Psychologist.

Completion of the MSc / PG Diploma in Health Psychology can lead to work directly related to health psychology but not requiring further professional training, for example, health promotion, research related to health and work within health care settings.

As a student studying full-time you will complete the MSc course in one year (12 months). You will undertake the Postgraduate Diploma modules between September and May, and complete your Master's dissertation over the summer for submission in September. As a student studying part-time (usually 24 months) you will undertake the Postgraduate Diploma between September and May over two consecutive years and usually complete the Master's dissertation over the summer of year two for submission in September.

Special Features

  • The Division of Psychology has a number of laboratories available for experiments and observations
  • Students will have access to the Eating Behaviour Laboratory, which has equipment that enables students to measure body composition (e.g. body mass index, % body fat and visceral fat level, lean body mass, predicted bone mass). These body composition measures are used alongside other data to explore the detailed facets of health and eating behaviour
  • We are very pleased that our Visiting Professor, Paula Nicolson will be contributing to this course

Teaching Methods

  • The programme will be delivered through blended learning. This means that a proportion of it will involve supported distance learning, while other aspects will require your attendance on campus. It also involves elements of problem based learning. Campus-based teaching and learning includes lectures which cover induction and/or substantive content, small group seminars, workshops, laboratory-based practicals and one-to-one supervision (dissertation).
  • If you are full-time you will be required to be available to attend the University two days a week. However, after the first two weeks of Semester 1 you will only be required to attend one day a week, apart from an examination at the end of Semester 1. In Semester 2 you will generally be required to attend two days a week, though this may not apply every week.
  • If you are part-time, you will generally be required to attend one day a week, though this may not apply every week.

Entry Requirements

  • An undergraduate Honours Degree (2:1 or above) conferring the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society

If you have prior certificated learning or professional experience which may be equivalent to parts of this programme, the University has procedures to evaluate this learning in order to provide you with exemptions from specified modules contained within the curriculum. Please talk to us if you do not fit the standard pattern of entry qualifications.
