Course Introduction

The Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care is a broad based health and social care course, which will enable you to work in a variety of health and social care positions after your studies. Past students have progressed to work as assistant practitioners in NHS trusts (in Primary Care, Community Mental Health and Acute Hospitals) or to work in a variety of roles in Social Services, Family Centres, Housing Associations, Children’s Services, Nursing and Residential Care Homes and Voluntary Organisations.

The Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care is:

  • Aimed at those who are working, or hoping to work in the field of health and social care
  • A vocationally focused course designed in partnership with employers and industry experts
  • Available on a full or part time basis at University of Bradford and on a part-time basis at Leeds City College and Calderdale College

Further study opportunities

Following graduation from the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care, many students choose to top up to a BSc (Hons) in Health, Wellbeing and Social Care or if working in the area of dementia care may choose to study BSc (Hons) Dementia Studies. Students may also choose to progress onto one of variety of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses at the School of Health Studies.

Stage 1 - 70 Credits:

  • Personal and Professional Development Planning (30 credits split over both Semesters, 15 credits per Semester) (C)
  • Health, Safety and Security (20 credits) (C)
  • Health and Social Care Policy (20 credits) (C)

Stage 2 - 50 Credits:

  • Work-based Learning 1 – Introduction to Practice (30 credits) (C)
  • Equality and Diversity (20 credits) (C)

Stage 3 – 60 Credits:

  • Health and Social Sciences (20 credits) (C)
  • Legal and Ethical Aspects of Health and Social Care (20 credits) (C)
  • Work-based Learning 2 – Practice and the Service User (20 credits) (C)

Stage 4 – 60 Credits:

  • Service Improvement – Evidence-based Practice (20 credits)(C)
  • Work-based Learning 3 – Practice in Context (40 credits) (C)

Entry Requirements

Our standard offer is:

  • GCSE English Language grade C or above (Key Skills Level 2 Literacy is accepted) AND
  • 160 UCAS points (from any combination of A Levels, Vocational A Levels, BTEC, OCR or AS Levels) including at least one full A Level or equivalent

Our non standard offer is:

  • GCSE English Language grade C or above (Key Skills Level 2 Literacy is accepted) AND
  • Either an Access to Higher Education Diploma OR
  • NVQ Level 3 in Care

Level of English Required

IELTS at 6.5 or equivalent
