BSc (Hons) in Financial Planning
Course overview
The BSc (Hons) in Financial Planning is a 4-year programme designed to develop your understanding of the theory and practice of financial planning, including the regulation and ethics in the financial services sector. The degree was developed in collaboration with the independent financial advice sector, to address the knowledge and skills needs of the sector. It incorporates first-hand practical experience working alongside industry practitioners.
In the 1st year of your Financial Planning degree, you will study a broad range of business-related subjects, providing you with foundation knowledge in the different functional areas of business and management. Modules include Business Economics, Business Law, Introduction to Accounting and Finance, Foundations of Marketing, Foundations of Production and Operations Management, Quantitative Methods in Information Management, Organisational Information Systems and Organisational Behaviour and the Sociology of Work. You will also study two optional modules.
In the 2nd year, you will develop your understanding of the theory and practice of financial accounting, management accounting, and finance, including personal finance. The core modules are: Capital Markets, Investment and Finance, Financial Accounting, Financial Management, Management Accounting, Principles of Personal Finance, Macroeconomics Environment for Business, Company Law and Administration and Practice of Management Skills. You will also study two optional modules.
In the 3rd year of your Financial Planning degree, you will undertake a work placement within a firm of independent financial advisors.
In the 4th year, you will concentrate on developing your understanding of the theory and practice of financial planning. Core modules are: Personal Financial Planning, Taxation, The Financial Services Sector and its Environment and Portfolio Investment Management. These modules address key topics in financial planning such as retirement planning, investment planning, estate planning, tax planning and risk management. A further 7 optional modules will be taken, enabling you to design a programme of study to suit your needs and interests.
Special features of the degree
- A placement year, thus providing you with first-hand practical experience working in a firm of financial advisors (this is a real paid job!), and potentially, an employment contract at the end of your degree study. The placement year is a vital part of your learning and will add significantly to your personal development, self confidence, planning, communication and business acumen skills, thus improving your employability
- Offers career opportunities, in the financial services sector (financial advising, wealth management, asset management, banking, insurance), an area where there is huge demand for graduates with the right knowledge and skills. The degree was designed in collaboration with the independent financial advice sector, which is particularly looking for graduates with the right knowledge and skills, so you are likely to be in demand! In addition, you can also work in accounting and finance, and business and management- so there are other options available to you on completion of your degree.
- Graduating with the degree in Financial Planning will provide exemption from five of the six units of the CII Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and other exemptions from relevant professional bodies, dependent on your module choices.The degree was developed in conjunction with market practitioners and we worked closely with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) who is the leading professional body in the financial services market. The CII Diploma is the most popular qualification used to meet the Financial Services Authority (FSA)'s minimum regulatory requirement. Completion of the Advanced Diploma meets the requirements for the award of Chartered Financial Planner. Additionally, the degree offers some exemptions from the main professional accounting bodies such as ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW.

For entry in 2012/13, minimum requirements will be:
320 points (four-year programme)
GCSE (or equivalent) English Language and Mathematics are also required at a minimum of grade C
