Prizes
If you attend lectures and tutorials regularly and perform well on the course, you may be eligible for one of the prizes offered by the accounting profession to our best accounting and finance students. They are:
West Yorkshire Society of Chartered Accountants (WYSCA)
Prize
(www.icaew.com)
In launching the prizes, in 2007, the WYSCA immediate past president, Gail Monnickendam, said: "The ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) qualification opens the door to a huge range of exciting career opportunities in every sector of business and finance in this country and around the world. The training produces chartered accountants, auditors and business advisors who are valued in all sectors, from practice to commerce, industry and the public sector. We felt that the WYSCA could do more towards supporting and encouraging the next generation. The bursaries are modest in financial terms, but we felt that, as well as the monetary prize, the other key element for the winners is that being a WYSCA bursary recipient will be something they can add to their CVs, which could enhance their career prospects and go a little way towards easing the way for the business leaders of the future."
Since 2010, the WYSCA prize is comprised of two parts:
1) First Year: Overall Best First-Year Accounting & Finance Student
Awarded annually in October to the overall best first-year BSc Accounting & Finance student.
2) Second Year Accounting & Finance Students - Essay Competition
In 2010, the WYSCA president Tim Parr said: "...we would like to encourage greater student involvement and encourage the potential award winners to really think about the financial issues of the day, rather than simply reward exam achievements."
Accordingly, WYSCA created an essay competition open to second year accountancy students at five Universities: Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds, Leeds Met and York. The students who choose to compete will write a 2,000 word essay on a topic of the WYSCA President's choice. The best essay from each university will be submitted to the WYSCA President, who will choose a winner. The prize will be £1,000 plus a free ticket to the WYSCA Annual Dinner and a trip to Chartered Accountants' Hall in London.
The topic for 2010/11 is "VAT is the only efficient tax - discuss".
Second Year: Baker Tilly (Chartered Accountants) Prize
(www.bakertilly.co.uk)
Awarded annually in October to the best second-year student on the course.
Third Year: Naylor Wintersgill Chartered Accountants Prize
(www.naylorwintersgill.com)
Awarded annually in July to the student with the best results in the final-year accounting and finance modules.
