Andy Bates - (Part-time MBA Student)
Background / Time Management and the part-time MBA
Hi, I'm Andy Bates, I come from York which is relatively local to Bradford. I'm currently an Operations Engineering Manager for a small food company just outside of York.
Background is, I was an apprentice on the railway, worked my way up, did a part-time degree, finished the degree, and then it was a question of what did I want to do next? I elected to do an MBA and so I could get more of a general business feel rather than specialising in the one field.
It works out about, let me think, I think it's 6 blocks in the first year, doing 2 modules each block. So it's every 2 months we're away for a week at a time, so once its planned in advance, you can plan your time out at work, it's easier to manage.
When I embarked on the MBA it was how could my family support me because it does take a lot of time out of the normal day. To do a full-time job and then come home and do an MBA as well, they tend to get neglected and pushed to the back a little bit. So I sat down with my partner and discussed that obviously her support was essential, without her support I couldn't do it. So it does impinge on it, but in two to three year's time they'll reap the benefits as well as myself.
