Sharing Good Practice: 8th Annual Learning, Teaching & Assessment Conference 2009

Tuesday 9 June 2009- 9.30 to 16.30

Keynote:

Why isn’t assessment always "for" learning – and what can we do about it?

Liz McDowell, Professor in Academic Practice and Director of the Assessment for Learning CETL, Northumbria University

Liz McDowellThere is a broad consensus that assessment is an important influence on learning. In higher education, Biggs’ idea of assessment ‘backwash’ has lead to concerns about negative effects of assessment on learning and learners. Assessment for learning is often proposed as the answer to the problem and there is good evidence of its positive effects. But assessment in higher education has certainly not been transformed – as yet. This presentation will explore some of the barriers to transformation and propose some ways in which we can use AfL approaches to make a difference.

Proposed strands:

LTA Strategy 2009-14

The Vision

The new LTA strategy is being developed. A number of academics from across the institution have met to discuss their vision. Here are the notes from those discussions; you will be prompted for your email/Blackboard username and password. If you have any difficulties accessing the materials, please email pebblepad@bradford.ac.uk::

The Reality Check

The Sharing Good Practice: 8th Annual LTA Conference provides the opportunity for us to find out what is happening now and for each of us to ask how we can use others' experiences to improve our own practice. Make sure you reserve your place.

The Journey Begins

We are entering a new era that requires all of us to adapt our practice if we are to meet the changing needs of learners. In his closing keynote at the LTA Conference, Prof Geoff Layer, will present his plans for how we can move forward so that our visions become reality over the next five years.

Call for papers

We invite academic and support staff to offer a short paper (25 minutes plus discussion), workshop (50 minutes) or poster presentation to demonstrate good practice.  Proposals should use the template (Word format) and be sent to tqe-sec@bradford.ac.uk . Please also refer to the notes for presenters.  To discuss ideas for a session, please email Professor Peter Hartley, p.hartley@bradford.ac.uk.

Closing date:  Friday 27 March 2009
