Teaching and learner support at Bradford

At the University of Bradford, a wide range of staff are involved in teaching and learner support roles; we include full and part-time lecturers, librarians, careers staff, learning technologists, learner support staff, graduate teaching assistants, technicians, hourly paid visiting lecturers and practice-based tutors. Each of us operating in one or more of these roles has an important part to play in positively influencing our students' learning experiences. What we do as teachers develops and changes as the nature of our students, our subjects and learning resources and technologies also changes.

Being an effective teacher and supporter of student learning involves us drawing upon a wide range of professional and disciplinary knowledge, skills and values. Staff are constantly evaluating, adapting and evolving our practices in the light of our experiences and those of our colleagues, together with evidence drawn from the sector at large, so that we can offer the best support and development opportunities to encourage effective and innovative practice.

Academic Development Unit

The Centre for Educational Development is based within the Academic Development Unit, and work with academic schools, course teams, individual academic staff and learning support professionals to enhance learning and teaching.

The Learner Development Unit (LDU) is also based with the Academic Development Unit. It supports students to develop their academic study, maths and interpersonal skills and can assist teaching staff to deliver skills development and personal development planning (PDP) sessions. They offer a 1-2-1 support service together with a comprehensive programme of workshops and clinics, and introduced Develop Me! a skills development gateway. The LDU have undertaken extensive research of the first year experience and have developed a Skills and Personal Reflective Activity (SaPRA) to support the PDP process.

Learner support

The University is committed to the national target that all students will have a support framework to develop their own progress files and access to a skills programme for monitoring and enhancing their personal skills.
