What is Student Central?

Student Central is a state of the art, integrated learning zone, and the heart of activity for students on campus. It comprises a new learning atrium over 2 floors, quiet and group study zones, Students' Union facilities, multi-function club and entertainment area, catering outlets and Careers, Counselling and Disability services - all linking through into the refurbished ground floor of the J B Priestley Library.

Student card and PINStudent card.

Use these to:

Your library borrower number is 9 digits (UB number PLUS issue number, both found on your student card). You will be given your PIN at the same time as your card

Lost your student card? Get a new one from the Hub (there may be a replacement charge).

Email, computers, printers and photocopiers

We have a web-based email service called Webmail. Login frequently to make sure you don’t miss important messages. A user guide is available.

Important:

F42, Richmond Building.We have a number of PC rooms, also called cluster rooms in the J B Priestley Library and across campus. Group study rooms (for 3 or more people), can be booked via the catalogue. There are also non-bookable individual study rooms, as well as open work spaces on all floors. F42, Richmond Building is a 24 hour access (year round) Sun Ray cluster.

We’ve given you some disk space to use on our central server. This is called your M:\ drive. Always keep a backup copy of your work! The Enquiries Point in the library sells USB sticks, CDs etc. You can also scan to a USB stick (pdf format) from some photocopiers.

If you have your own computer, use ResNet (our free network), available in some Halls of Residence.Got a laptop or other portable device? Connect to RoamNet, our free roaming network. Problem with your computer? Book an appointment at the PC Clinic - phone 01274 233333. Protect and make the most of your computer.

Printing and photocopying are done on the same multifunction machines:

  1. Credit your account via the pay station in any of the libraries
  2. Login to the machine with your student card and PIN to either photocopy or select the job you want to print

Printing guides are available. Make sure you read the copyright info on the wall above the photocopiers! Please note: printing procedures may vary in some areas in the University.

Using the Library

You can assess and develop your generic academic skills, and record meetings, achievements and do personal development planning.

Finding and borrowing books

Undergraduates can borrow 8 items + 6 Quick Service items. Postgraduates can borrow 14 items + 6 Quick Service items. Use the self-issue machines to borrow everything except for Quick Service items (held at J B Priestley Library) and books you’ve requested – go to the Enquiries Point for these. Loan periods vary. You can still borrow with fines up to £5.

To renew your books, call our 24-hour renewals service (01274 233342) or login to your record via the catalogue. You can’t renew if you have a fine of £5 or more, or if the book has been reserved.

To return your book, use the self returns machine at the J B Priestley Library or drop books into the chute in the wall outside Student Central. There are book drop bins at the branch libraries.

Distance learner or postgraduate?

Additional Library services are available if you’re enrolled on an eligible distance learning course. IT drop-in workshops for postgraduates are available during term time - Room F29, Richmond Building on Wednesdays, 1-3pm.

Health, safety and security

Your health, safety and security are important. If the fire alarm sounds, leave the building immediately. Make sure you know what to do in the event of accident, theft or emergency whilst you are in our buildings. J B Priestley Library Security can be contacted on 01274 235215 (in case of emergency, call 01274 234499).
