These are the services and resources available to you as a member of staff. If you cannot find the information you are looking for, please ask.


Staff card and PIN

Use it to:

Your library borrower number is 9 digits (staff ID number PLUS issue number, both found on your card. You can choose a PIN when you register for a card with the Library.

Tip!forgotten your PIN? Use the 'Find Library PIN' option from the Start menu on LSS maintained computers, or ask in the Library.

Computers, email, usernames and passwords

Usernames and passwords

There are four types!

Email

University-supported email software for staff is Outlook. We also have a Web-based email service called Webmail, which lets you access your email from any computer, anywhere. User guides are available.

Important: do not open email attachments unless you recognise and trust the source These can contain viruses which are harmful to PCs.

Where can I save my files?

You will have access to your departmental staff network drives (usually designated G and H drives). We've also given you 100MB of disk space to use on our central server. This is called your M:\ drive (Start menu - UoB Apps - Utilities - Connect to M:\ drive). Always keep a backup of your work

Tip!you can also access files from home.

Borrowing a laptop

If you require a laptop for short period, eg, to give a lecture, then you can borrow one from Audio Visual Services.

What if I have my own computer?

Protect your computer against viruses. If you use a laptop or other portable device on campus you can connect to the Roamnet Service, where available.

What if I need help with using computers?

See our Staff IT training and support sessions and latest training news. You can also contact the Learner Support Centre (for both staff and students) for any IT-related queries.

Printing or photocopying in the Library

To print: credit your printing account at the pay stations in any of the libraries. Different types of printer are available: self-service and central colour. Collect printouts from the printers in computer rooms where available, or login to the print release stations adjacent to the printers on Floors 0 and 01 in the J B Priestley Building, the Health Studies Library and the Management Library to print your work. Here, the output will be delivered to the printer for immediate collection. Printing guides are available.

To photocopy: credit your photocopying account via the pay station in any of the libraries. Remember to read the copyright information on the wall.

What about borrowing books?

What can I borrow?

Quick Service items are held at J B Priestley Library. Use the self-issue machines to borrow everything except Quick Service items and books you've reserved – go to the counter for these.

Tip!loan periods vary and you can't borrow if you have a fine.

How do I renew my books?

Phone our 24-hour renewals service - 01274 233342, or login to your record on the Borrower Info tab on the Library Catalogue.

Tip!you can't renew if you have a fine of £10 or more, or if the book has been reserved.

How do I return my book?

Use the self-returns machine in the J B Priestley Building (Floor 0), or go to the counters at the Health Studies and Management Libraries. There is also a book chute on the wall outside the J B Priestley Building.

Suppport for teaching and research

Library resources

The University Library can help support teaching and learning through the use of our resources and expertise. You may also be able to make use of other University libraries through the SCONUL Access Scheme.

Your Subject Librarian can advise you on the best resources for your subject area and can help your students individually, or as a class. Get in touch to find out other ways that we can help support your teaching.

Tip!to help ensure your recommended texts are in stock, please provide us with the latest copy of your reading lists!

Career development

We offer an online booking system for staff training courses, which are available to all staff.

The Teaching Quality Enhancement Group can advise on applying for the PGCHEP course, HEA applications and offers support towards teaching recognition awards or getting involved in educational research projects.

Career Development Services offer careers related information, advice and guidance both online and in person. Although primarily for students, we are happy to extend our services to staff who would like to consider their options, where resources allow. Mon–Thurs 9-5, Fri 9-4. Advisers by appointment.

Telephone Scheme

If you need to make personal calls on your office telephone, you can purchase a pre-paid calling card. These are available from the J B Priestley Library, the Payzone (in the Hub), and Health Studies and Management Libraries. No joining fee or upfront service charge is required.

Health, safety and security information

Your health, safety and security are important. If the fire alarm sounds, leave the building immediately. Make sure you know what to do in the event of accident, theft or emergency whilst you are in our buildings. In case of emergency, phone Security – 01274 234499.

Your commitment to us and to other users

We ask you to respect our facilities and the rights of others. Please help to keep our buildings pleasant places to work. We ask you to keep noise to a minimum, not to smoke anywhere, and not to use mobile phones in silent working areas. Please make time to read the full regulations.

What if I need to talk to someone?

LSS staff are more than happy to talk to you about our services - contacts list. If you have a more serious concerns, don't struggle alone. The Counselling Service based in the Communal Building is available, offering support and information, and someone to talk to.
