Instructions for installing version 8.8 of VirusScan Enterprise

If you have problems with this process, please contact ICT Servicedesk to arrange an appointment with the PC clinic.

1. Check your current version

This step should be taken only if you already have McAfee antivirus software. If not, please proceed to Step 2.

Please note: version 8.0 of VirusScan Enterprise stopped downloading updates as of February 2009. All computers on campus should be using version 8.5i or higher of VirusScan Enterprise.

  1. Click on the McAfee icon on your taskbar at the bottom of your computer screen.
  2. Choose VirusScan Enterprise.
  3. Choose About VirusScan Enterprise.

The window will tell you which version you are running. If you have any version prior to 8.8, we recommend you upgrade to this latest version

2. Uninstall previous antivirus version

You should ensure any existing antivirus software is removed before installing a new version. This is generally done through the Add / Remove programs application in the Control Panel. However, it's important to note that some virus applications have their own uninstall procedures, which you will need to follow - please check in your Windows Start menu for these.

  1. Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs (For users of Vista, this is Programs and Features).
  2. Find McAfee VirusScan (or other antivirus software you may have, eg, Norton Antivirus).
  3. Choose Remove or Uninstall (depending on operating system).
  4. Click Yes to confirm when the dialog box appears.

The uninstall process may take several minutes. The virus scan software will disappear from the Add / Remove Programs window.

3. Install the latest version

  1. Go to http://www.bradford.ac.uk/lss/it-services/software/virus/index.php#dow and click on the link for VirusScan 8.8.
  2. Save the file to your hard disk.
  3. Choose Run (or locate the file and double click it to run it). The setup wizard will start. Ensure you read all information supplied during the installation.
  4. Read and accept the Terms and Licence Agreement.
  5. When asked for the Licence Agreement type, choose Perpetual.
  6. Continue with the installation, accepting the default options.
  7. Click on Finish.
