Free AntiVirus Software Available on CD-ROM

The University has a licence from Network Associates which allows it to distribute virus protection software to staff and students. This free software is available on CD-ROM for use on office computers, and personal computers belonging to current staff and students of the University. Please obtain one from the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk. Copies will also be available for loan from all of the University libraries. In addition, we have a limited number of VirusScan CDs for Mac OSX. Please ask at the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk.

If you are using a telephone dial-up internet connection we recommend that you use the CD-ROM as the downloads available below will take a considerable time to obtain. Broadband users should be able to download the software without problems.

Departmental computers should already have VirusScan installed on them by IT support staff and if you have queries regarding your office computer you should contact your departmental IT support, rather than downloading and installing any software.

AntiVirus software available for download

VirusScan is available on CDROM (see above), but is provided here for convenience. This new version offers improved protection from unwanted software and attacks by internet worms and malicious applications.

VirusScan will work on Windows 2000 / XP / Vista and 7. Installers are configured to download updates automatically, provided you have an internet connection. If you are running older versions of the software we recommend that you upgrade.

Please note: version 8.0 of VirusScan Enterprise stopped downloading updates as of February 2009. All computers on campus should be using version 8.5i of VirusScan Enterprise or higher, which does not suffer from this issue, however we are aware that a number of staff and students will have installed version 8 on their home computers. Please therefore download version 8.7i via the link below, or via the latest CDROM available from Reception.

A valid University username and password are required to download the VirusScan software.

Spyware Tools

Spyware (sometimes called malware) is unwanted software which may be installed on your computer without your knowledge. It may perform actions such as redirecting your web browser's search page or adding 'helpful' toolbars which track your activities on the internet, or more insidious behaviour. Not all spyware can be trapped by antivirus software so there exists a different type of cleansing application. Adaware and Spybot, the leading tools for removal of spyware are provided here for you to check your computer.
