Recommended IT 'at risk' dates

The University has an agreed 'at risk' period for IT service upgrades, updates and maintenance activity. On the one hand, it is important that we maintain up to date services, and on the other hand, to take account of business priorities around teaching, assessment and clearing.

This year the IT 'at risk' period begins from 07:00 on Monday 19 December through to 18:00 on Friday 6 January. For the staff vacation period commencing Thursday 22 December, 17:00 through to 07:30 on 3 January there will be no changes to the University IT systems. Most systems will remain available as normal over the Christmas / New Year period i.e. we do not anticipate any planned interruptions for maintenance etc. The key services affected during this period are:

• Blackboard will be unavailable all day on Monday 19 December 2011 for essential maintenance work to take place. Affected systems accessed via Blackboard include Turnitin, Elluminate and Question Mark Perception.
• Due to a major system upgrade, SAINT, e:Vision, Online Applications and Enquiries will be unavailable on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 December. Users of the system will receive an email when the system is available again; we expect this to be late afternoon of Tuesday 20 December 2011.
• For SAINT users in particular, please do not use the scanners or the 'email-to-efile' service to store student records in eFile while the SAINT database is being upgraded on Monday and Tuesday. These services use SAINT to validate the data and will not be operational.
• The Library system (Millennium) will be upgraded from 16:00 on Thursday 5 January.
• Estates and Facilities have advised that the J B Priestley Computer Server Rooms will be powered using generator supplies during the day on Thursday 5 January. This is to carry out electrical testing and the enabling works for a permanent generator backup facility. We expect all IT services to continue without interruption using battery backup and generator supply, however services are operating 'at risk'. Particular services at risk of a short interruption during the late afternoon are: E5 (finance system), G and H drives and Question Mark Perception.
• A range of software patches and security upgrades to services may mean short interruptions to service which we will advise in advance.

We reserve the right to interrupt services if this is necessary during the 'at risk' period, however, we will endeavour to communicate this with any affected users in advance and we will minimise impact. Please send any feedback to ICT Servicedesk. This service is available all year round and is a 24x7 service.
