Remote access to files

Students and Staff - central Unix File Store: muser

All staff and students are given a central filestore (usually designated as the M drive) that can be accessed from anywhere on campus or remotely. The username and password is the same as you would use to login to email. The M drive should not be used as a permanent filestore.

Remote Access (FTP)

Point your browser to ftp://ftp.brad.ac.uk, deselect 'Log on anonymously' and login with your University username and password, or refer to Transferring Files using FTP.

Staff - departmental network drives

Please also see Working Off Site.

Files stored on departmental network drives (usually designated G and H drives) can be accessed from remote locations. The username and password for accessing this service are the ones you would normally use to access your school/department network. This does not apply to staff in Informatics and Engineering - please contact your local IT support.

Novell NetStorage

Method 1
If you have Windows Vista, you'll need to switch off the TLS 1.0 security setting in Internet Explorer (this will be fixed in a future version of NetStorage). Go to Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab. Remove the tick from the Use TLS 1.0 box (near the bottom). Click on Ok.

  1. Point your Web browser to https://nwftp.brad.ac.uk/oneNet/NetStorage - the url is case sensitive and it MUST begin with https.
  2. If you get a certificate message you should accept this by clicking on Yes.
  3. You will then be prompted to enter the username and password that you use to login to the school/department network.

This service is not supported by all browsers.

Method 2
This method offers a more permanent solution for Windows XP users.

  1. In Windows Explorer, click on the Tools menu and select Map Network Drive.
  2. In the Map Network Drive dialog box, click on the link: Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server. [Vista users click: Connect to a web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures.]
  3. In the Add Network Place [Vista users: Add Network Location] Wizard, click Next.
  4. Select the Choose another network location [Vista users select: Choose a custom network location] option and then click Next.
  5. In the Internet or network address box type in https://nwftp.brad.ac.uk/oneNet/NetStorage/ (case sensitive).
  6. Click on Next.
  7. In the next window, deselect Log on anonymously and insert your normal username. (You will be prompted to enter your password each time you connect to the FTP server.)
  8. Click on Next.
  9. If desired, type a specific name for the network place, then click Next, and Finish.
  10. In the Log On As dialog box, enter your password and then click Log On.  The contents of your M drive will then be displayed.
  11. A 'Connect to nwftp.brad.ac.uk' box will appear. Enter your username and password and click on OK.

Never work on files across a network connection. Always save any file you want to work on to your computer, then save and upload it across the network when you have finished.

Access from lecture rooms

Staff who have applications delivered to their PC using the UoB Apps option on the Start menu can map a drive on their staff PCs to their Unix filestore (designated as the M drive) and then access this from lecture rooms.

To map an M drive on your staff PC, go to the Start menu - UoB Apps - Utilities - Connect to M drive. You will be prompted to enter your email username and password. You can then save your files to the M drive, and later open them on the lecture room PCs from the My Documents folder, which is directed to the M drive.
