Remote access to files

Students and Staff - central Unix File Store: muser

All staff and students are given a central filestore (usually designated as the M drive) that can be accessed from anywhere on campus or remotely. The username and password is the same as you would use to login to email. You can change your password using the Change email password utility. The M drive should not be used as a permanent filestore.

Remote Access (FTP)

To transfer files to your central Unix file store (muser) using Internet Explorer, point your browser to ftp://username@ftp.brad.ac.uk, or refer to Transferring Files using FTP (pdf format).

Staff - departmental network drives

Files stored on departmental network drives (usually designated G and H drives) can be accessed from remote locations. The username and password for accessing this service are the ones you would normally use to access your school/department network. This does not apply to staff in Informatics and Engineering - please contact your local IT support.

Novell NetStorage

Method 1
This method offers a more permanent solution for Windows XP users.

  1. Go to the Start menu and choose My Network Places (If this is not listed open the Control Panel, go to Network Connections and choose My Network Places).
  2. Choose Add a network place (on the left).
  3. A Wizard will open. Work through the Wizard selecting Choose another network location, entering https://nwftp.brad.ac.uk/oneNet/NetStorage/ as the Web address and giving your connection a name, eg NetStorage. If you get a certificate you should accept this by clicking on Yes. You will also be prompted to enter the username and password that you use to login to the school/department network. If you get a certificate message you should accept this by clicking on Yes.
  4. Once the connection is set up, open the Start menu; go to My Network Places and double click on your NetStorage connection. Your files will display via Windows Explorer.
  5. If you cannot see your folder list, open the View menu, choose Explorer Bar and select Folders.

Method 2
If you have Windows Vista, you'll need to switch off the TLS 1.0 security setting in Internet Explorer (this will be fixed in a future version of NetStorage). Go to Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab. Remove the tick from the Use TLS 1.0 box (near the bottom). Click on Ok.

  1. Point your Web browser to https://nwftp.brad.ac.uk/NetStorage - the url is case sensitive and it MUST begin with https.
  2. If you get a certificate message you should accept this by clicking on Yes.
  3. You will then be prompted to enter the username and password that you use to login to the school/department network.
  4. This service is not supported by all browsers. If it does not work for you, you will need to use the FTP instructions below.

Remote access (FTP)

This service allows members of staff to access all the data available to them via a normal login, eg access to files stored on G:\ drive.

You will need to use a fully qualified login name eg .username.bcid.ssis.brad (the initial dot is essential). If you do not know this, you can find it on your University PC by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del; this displays a Netware dialogue window where the top portion shows your Netware login information, for example .username.bcid.ssis.brad would be displayed as:

### is logged into NDS tree BRAD
as CN=###. OU=bcid. OU=ssis. O=brad

The password is the one you would normally use to login to your school/departmental network.

Using FTP software, you need to enter the following details at the appropriate prompts:

If you are unfamiliar with using FTP software, there are guides to help you at http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/documentation/index.php#Network.

To ftp using Internet Explorer, enter the address as ftp://####@nwftp.brad.ac.uk where #### = your fully qualified login name, eg ftp://.username.bcid.ssis.brad@nwftp.brad.ac.uk

Note: Please note that with some FTP clients you may not be able to access folders/files that use spaces in their names.

Access from lecture rooms

Staff who have applications delivered to their PC using the UoB Apps option on the Start menu can map a drive on their staff PCs to their Unix filestore (designated as the M drive) and then access this from lecture rooms.

To map an M drive on your staff PC, go to the Start menu - UoB Apps - Utilities - Connect to M drive. You will be prompted to enter your email username and password. You can then save your files to the M drive, and later open them on the lecture room PCs from the My Documents folder, which is directed to the M drive.
