SPSS is a computer application for statistical analysis. Analysis can be done in both interactive and non-interactive modes.
SPSS is available on all Learner Support Services cluster PCs. Students and Staff at University of Bradford are also allowed to run SPSS on their own computers. To run SPSS you need to install it from either a CD on your own computer (which can be purchased from the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk) or from the UoB Apps server on a networked campus PC.
The licence is valid for a year under the current licence agreement with the supplier and expires on 31 July of each year. The licence can be installed as part of the SPSS installation. Alternatively, you can run the Licence Authorisation wizard from the SPSS program group (Start -> All Programs).
To install the licence you need to know the Authorisation code, and if you do not have an internet connection for your PC you must also know the lock code for your PC. This code is very specific to the computer on which you are going to install SPSS. This code is needed to get the licence for those who do not have internet connection to the PC on which SPSS going to be installed. Without this you will not be able to obtain the license form the supplier of SPSS. Please refer to the SPSS Installation guide below.
If installing SPSS from a CD that you've purchased at the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk, you will need to use the Authorisation code (valid from 1 August to 31 July the following year) that you will receive with the CD. The Authorisation code enables you to obtain the site licence from SPSS UK Ltd. If you want to renew your licence after the expiry date, please contact the Library and IT Help desk or visit the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk.
SPSS works with two kinds of licence:
It is possible to run multiple versions of SPSS on your computer, if you have sufficient disk space. You can install the most recent version and run that alongside any older version.
You'll need to obtain a renewal activation code from the J. B. Priestley Library Welcome Desk for the older version. However, if you do not have any compelling reason to run an older version, we would advise you to run only the most current version.
You are advised to install patches for any bugs encountered in the SPSS program. These can be downloaded.
