Pharmacy is a science-based profession that specialises in managing the use of medicines in the clinical treatment and prevention of disease.
Pharmacy is a broad and challenging profession in which pharmacists are key members of a healthcare team.
It's a rewarding career that involves extensive contact with patients to enable them to take their medicines safely and appropriately. You can work in sectors such as community, hospital, industry, primary care, GP Practice and academia.
At Bradford, our aim is to produce pharmacists who are:
It is an exciting time to be joining pharmacy. The role of the pharmacist is evolving with the introduction of new services and high expectations from the UK government.
We will be implementing a new curriculum from September 2012 which is designed by pharmacists using sound educational adult learning theory to develop the skills for you to practise as a pharmacist in 2016 and beyond.
This innovative and revolutionary programme has been built with advice from employers and other key stakeholders to achieve the patient-centred outcomes needed by pharmacists in practice.
The programme will be presented as integrated themes that are embedded in, and run throughout the programme. You will also develop the skills to become a life-long reflective learner, effective problem solver, creative thinker, team player and an ethical and socially responsible healthcare professional.
You will develop the confidence and competence to manage minor ailments, review a patient’s medicines, process prescriptions, critically review scientific evidence, educate patients and provide advice on how to prevent illness and disease, with the aim of providing high quality pharmacy care.
Encountering patients at each stage of the programme either in the class room, in the practice setting or in their own homes will be part of the learning process. You will have the opportunity to learn through ‘patient simulations’ in the classroom.
You may choose to select study topics (in each stage of the programme) in which you have developed a particular interest or those that relate to future careers possibilities.
You will develop the skills and confidence necessary to practise as a pharmacist and to optimise your employability through an innovative ‘Capability in Pharmacy’ strand running throughout the programme.
Our facilities in conjunction with Curriculum 2012 are designed to develop independent learners who possess the skills to manage their own life-long learning needs; accordingly the strategies used to develop these skills include directed self-study of subject content ‘out of class’ with the emphasis of ‘in-class time’ being placed on learning how to use this new knowledge.
We use a range of teaching and learning methods:
Please note that the proposed programme is subjected to internal approval by the University and external accreditation by the General Pharmaceutical Council in 2012 and as such is subject to change.
