Biography

After completing his DPhil, Professor Menotti received a British Academy Reckitt Fellowship, and continued his research in Oxford. In 2001, he became research assistant to Professor Andrew Sherratt, working in particular on the ArchAtlas project - www.archatlas.org. During his years in Oxford, he was also part-time lecturer at the University of Reading, and at the University of Bristol.

Research Areas

Professor Menotti's main area of research is Later European prehistory, encompassing in particular wetland archaeology and lacustrine settlements in the Late Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. More specifically, he is interested in the archaeology of semi-complex societies, settlement analyses, operation of socio-economic systems and their impact on settlement patterns, landscape studies on cultural change and population displacement due to climatic variation, regional and inter-regional interaction, migration, acculturation and ancient networks of trade and exchange.

His particular interest in long-distance trade routes, migrations and cultural movements between Eastern and Western Europe, brought him to expand his area of research to Ukraine prehistory (mainly the Chalcolithic period), with a special emphasis placed upon the last phase of the Cucuteni-Tripolye/Trypillia culture and the so-called giant-settlement phenomenon in the Dnieper-Southern Bug interfluve.

Current Projects

  • The lake-dwellings in the Circum-Alpine region
  • The Cucuteni-Trypillia cultural complex in Ukraine
  • The prehistoric lacustrine settlement of Viverone
  • Tracing long-distance trade route in prehistoric Europe
