Subject Guide to Special Collections
These are the headings we have found to be most useful to our readers. Each section includes an overview and a list of the most relevant collections.
Research and teaching in archaeology at the University of Bradford integrates geography and the environment and brings together science and humanities to find out more about people of the past. Our three major archives in this subject area reflect these approaches. Jacquetta Hawkes united a poet's imagination with scientific discipline: she popularised the subject through books and broadcasts, and corresponded with many archaeologists. Arthur Raistrick was a pioneering industrial archaeologist who took a painstaking but popular approach to the study of lead mining in the Dales in particular. Calvin Wells brought his medical training to the study of archaeological evidence, developing the science of palaeopathology.
The Archive of the Prehistoric Society, currently being donated to Special Collections, will form an important new resource for the history of archaeology.
We do not aim to duplicate the comprehensive collections of material in local public libraries and record offices, though the Local Book Collection offers many standard works. Our collections reflect University history and interests, and include material on local industries and writers. We collect material about two regions: the West Riding and the Yorkshire Dales. Many of the peace-related collections concern campaigns in Bradford and Yorkshire.

Again, our collections focus on modern history. Following the University's historic research interests and Commonweal's specialisms, we have clusters of collections concerning the Balkans and India. Many of the peace-related collections concern international developments and shared campaigns.

Special Collections contains the archives of the University and its predecessor institutions, the Technical College and Institute of Technology. The University Book Collection offers books published by the University or otherwise part of its story. We also have archives of politicians and academic staff who made a difference to the organisation, and two small archives on matters particularly affecting students. Many of the peace-related collections involved University people.
We have a wide range of pre-1850 books on these subjects, thanks to the original interests of the Technical College which became the University. The archives relate mainly to Bradford's textile industries: innovations, working life, disease. We also have much to offer on the industries, wildlife and geology of the Yorkshire Dales. Our archives and books relating to nuclear issues often explore the science and technology in depth, notably the Rotblat books.

This is our largest subject area. Peace studies material is also relevant to many other subjects, including the study of local, social and political history, women's history, and design. The sub-headings should give an idea of the range of material in Special Collections. Our greatest strength is probably the late 1950s and early 1960s material relating to the use of nonviolence in anti-nuclear campaigning. There is also much from 1980s nuclear disarmament, and a great deal concerning the role of the University, city and region in peace campaigns.

Book collections
Many of our archives were created by religious individuals or organisations, in particular Quakers and Methodists, and reflect peace testimony and efforts for social change. Here we have listed a few of the peace-related collections that contain most detail about this aspect. There will be relevant material in many others. We also have excellent collections of historic Quaker books, many theological and esoteric works in the Mitrinovic Library, and material concerning Anglicans.
