The History of Science and Technology Collection

A small artificial collection of printed books, most transferred to Special Collections from Main Stock. They cover many aspects of science and technology, including zoology, botany, chemistry, optics, building and transport, especially railways. Almost all date from the hand-press era, pre-1850.

Highlights include:

• The botanical magazine; or, flower-garden displayed by William Curtis. The Special Collections Librarian's favourite printed book, this features stunning colour illustrations of flowers.
• The cabinet of gems, or vocabulary of precious stones More illustrations, of gemstones.
• Some very practical handbooks, such as A compendium of mechanics by Robert Brunton
