The Use of Mobile Telephones in Learner Support Areas : Code of Practice
New guidelines came into effect on 1 September 2002 that regulate the
use of mobile telephones in Learner Support areas. These follow changes
to Library Regulations as approved by Senate which recognise today’s
changed social and technical environment and underpin the following
Code of Practice.
- Buildings and spaces occupied by Learner Support
Services must be able to provide appropriate physical environments
for the proper conduct of supporting learning in all its forms. To
that end, the use of mobile telephones for non-academic purposes
is strongly discouraged.
- Users may bring mobile phones into all areas
within Learner Support: the incoming call alert must be switched
to silent.
- Handset keys must be set to silent operation.
- Calls may only be made from "authorised areas". These are currently
any of the stair lobbies or cloakrooms in the J. B. Priestley Building
and the cloakroom in the Management Library.
- Calls may not be made from any other
area within Learner Support, including carrels, PC Cluster rooms and
group study rooms.
- Incoming calls may be taken anywhere in Learner Support areas, except
in those areas that have been designated as "Silent Areas"
and in PC cluster rooms. Call recipients must make all efforts to ensure
that noise is kept to a minimum and, where possible should move to an
authorised area for the duration of the conversation. In particular,
the call alert must be silent.
- Library Regulation 6.4 is consequently amended to read as follows:
"persons using the Library must not cause any unnecessary noise
or disturbance. The use of mobile telephones is discouraged. When used,
such use must be in accordance with published guidelines. In particular,
the use of mobile telephones for making and receiving calls in areas
designated as "Silent Areas", the making of calls in unauthorised
areas and the use of mobile telephones in such a way as to cause unnecessary
noise or disturbance in any other part of the libraries, will be deemed
a breach of this regulation".
