The Capability Procedure

If at any stage during the period of study your Principal Supervisor considers that your progress is unsatisfactory or that the standard of your work is generally below that expected, it is important that you be made aware of the situation as soon as possible.  It is expected that the Principal Supervisor, in consultation with the Director of Postgraduate Research, will initially follow the Informal Stage of the Capability Procedure before invoking the Formal Stage.

It should be noted that at any meeting regarding unsatisfactory progress held between you and your Principal Supervisor and/or Director of Postgraduate Research, whether at the formal or informal stage, you have the right to be accompanied by a second person who can act as your "friend".

In the event of the Capability Procedure being invoked, it is important that the student and all concerned understand the process and the requirements within it.  Please refer to Sections 9 - 11 of the Regulations for Research Degrees, for full detail (follow the Quick Link on the right hand side of the webpage).  In addition, there are also forms that should be completed for both the Informal and Formal Stages, available online: http://www.brad.ac.uk/hub/ResearchStudents/Forms/
